I was searching for lip gloss when I initially stumbled upon Pat McGrath Labs. A beauty editor recommended their Nude 5 lipgloss for dark-skinned women. I was relatively new to the beauty world, so I didn’t know who Pat McGrath was. If you are like me, let me fill you in. Pat McGrath has been called the most influential makeup artist in the world by Vogue. She is sought by celebrities and beauty companies alike for her expertise. In other words, she reigns in the beauty world. Due to her high level of influence, she is known simply as “Mother”. In 2015, she launched her makeup line called Pat McGrath Labs. Since then, people have been obsessed with her products. She has select products available in Sephora and other stores around the US. However, her most comprehensive collection is available online at patmcrath.com. I felt nervous about shopping online because I had never bought any McGrath products previously. However, the company did a few things that made it easy. Here’s what I liked about the online shopping experience:
Common Sense Inclusivity:
I was visually stunned by the Pat McGrath website because the makeup models were so diverse. I saw women who were Black, White, and Asian wearing the products. Moreover, every product was photographed on models with light, medium, and dark skin tones (see below). I loved this! Sometimes a shade will look different on various skin tones. I've bought lip products because they looked great on a model whose skin tone was much different. When I tried it on in real life, I didn't like the shade at all. Mother Pat is making sure that doesn't happen anymore. Each product is displayed on various skin tones, which makes it much easier to determine which colors work best for me.

Stunning Lip Colors:
Mother is creating makeup for all! Every lip product is available in various colors. Notably, most shades complement every skin tone. In the past, my biggest issue with makeup companies was the lack of inclusivity. Million-dollar companies would make products that only looked good on certain skin shades. I love that Mother is consciously creating makeup for everyone. This requires a lot of effort and I heartily applaud this!
Virtual filters:
I feel like most online makeup recommendation systems do not work on POC. It’s a redundant experience that goes as follows. A makeup website would require me to submit a photo or record myself. After receiving my images, they would use tech analysis to steer me toward the right products. These systems never worked for me. The shades they recommended never seemed right. Moreover, I hated giving companies my photos. Although I am a blogger, submitting footage to an online retailer makes me uncomfortable. Pat McGrath's labs is different. Customers can try on products virtually using a filter. It’s very similar to Snapchat. You swipe right and you can “try on” every shade of a given product. This made me feel more comfortable with my purchases. I had a better idea of what I looked like in the product. I understand this feature is probably expensive for a company to purchase. However, I hope it becomes an industry standard. It’s far less invasive than the photo submission option. Moreover, it’s more engaging. Most customers prefer to use a virtual filter instead of receiving product recommendations. This option places more power in the hands of the consumer.

My Purchase:
After this exceptional buyer experience, I bought the Flesh Fantasy lipgloss and the Flesh 5 lipstick. I also purchased the Skin Fetish foundation in the shade Medium 20. I am happy with my purchases and plan on buying more! If you’ve ever bought makeup online from Pat McGrath Labs, let me know what you want and how it went in the comments!
